Before Deciding Which Web Hosting Company to Use

By Timothy Phelucci

Choosing hosting can be complicated, especially if you are new to website building. If you haven't ever built a site before, finding hosting for it will seem like an incredibly complicated process. There are so many companies to choose from! How do you know which one is right for you? There are some tricks and tips that you can use to speed the process along.

How extensive are your FTP needs? If you are confused just by looking at the letters FTP you will probably be just fine using one of the free and web based hosting packages that is available all over the web. If your FTP needs are extensive, you should make sure that any hosting program you purchase will have a way of meeting those needs. Some FTP access is web based. Other hosts will ask you to download a FTP program of your own.

If you are uncomfortable with doing your own FTP, you should choose a company that will allow you to use their web based services. If, on the other hand, you require 100% control over your files and transfers, you will want to choose a hosting package that allows you to use outside software and applications for your FTP needs. Will your website stand by itself or will it end up being part of a bigger network that you plan to build? If you only want to build a single site you have plenty of cheap options available to you. If you want to build a network of sites you should choose hosting that will allow you to put several domain names on your server space. Some hosting providers place strict limits on the domain names an account is allowed to have. The more complicated your project is, the more complicated your hosting needs will be. Your priority should be finding hosting that will meet your needs without charging you exorbitant rates to do so.

Try out the companies used by the site developers that you admire. It is easy to fake a good review on a website so if you want to get information that you can trust, ask your site developer friends which hosting company they like best. Most website developers are happy to help newcomers figure out which hosting options are best. You might even be able to use some of the site owner's server space to give it a try while you figure out which hosting service is right for you. Lots of site owners earn extra money by selling space on their server accounts. To buy server space for a good price (on someone else's account) ask your site builder friends for good deals.

Ask web developers you trust which hosting they use. Reviews on forums and official websites can easily be doctored-the best source of non solicited advice is your site developer friends! Most web builders and developers are more than happy to share their hosting preferences for people who need help making a decision. You might even be offered server space on the site developer's account to help you get started with your project while you figure out which hosting company is best for you. Subletting server space is quite common in the web development world. The easiest way to get a good deal on this type of space is to buy space from a site owner you trust. Keeping yourself safe from scam artists when you are searching for hosting can feel like a hard task. It is always better to be safe than sorry. It is not possible to be too careful or to ask too many questions. Do not forget that you will be trading your money for the services that this company offers its customers. You need to be careful about who you share your private information (and bank account numbers) with. It would be terrible for you to trust someone who turned out to be scam artists. Scammers are absolutely everywhere! You can't be too careful.
